Karl Hanke wurde 1903 in Schlesien geboren und trat früh der NSDAP bei. Er machte rasch Karriere innerhalb der Partei, galt als disziplinierter Funktionär und überzeugter Nationalsozialist. In den 1930er Jahren arbeitete er eng mit Joseph Goebbels im Propagandaministerium zusammen und wurde bald einer der einflussreichsten Gauleiter in Schlesien.

Als Gauleiter von Niederschlesien war Hanke verantwortlich für die Umsetzung nationalsozialistischer Politik in der Region, einschließlich der Zwangsarbeit und Deportationen. Seine Loyalität zu Hitler war bedingungslos – selbst in den letzten Wochen des Zweiten Weltkriegs blieb er überzeugt vom „Endsieg“, obwohl die Niederlage Deutschlands längst besiegelt war.

Am 29. April 1945 ernannte Hitler ihn in seinem politisch-testamentarischen Dokument zum Reichsführer SS, als Nachfolger von Heinrich Himmler, der in Ungnade gefallen war. Diese Ernennung machte Hanke zum letzten Mann an der Spitze der gefürchteten SS, doch er konnte das Amt kaum ausüben.

Nach der Kapitulation Deutschlands versuchte Hanke, der Gefangennahme durch die Alliierten zu entkommen. Seine Flucht endete jedoch tragisch: Er wurde von tschechischen Widerstandskämpfern festgenommen und starb kurz darauf unter ungeklärten Umständen. Sein Tod markierte das Ende eines Mannes, der bis zuletzt an ein verbrecherisches Regime glaubte.

Historiker betrachten Hanke heute als typischen Vertreter der zweiten Generation nationalsozialistischer Funktionäre – ehrgeizig, fanatisch und vollständig in das System verstrickt. Er verkörpert das Schicksal vieler, die Macht über Moral stellten und in den letzten Tagen des Dritten Reiches selbst Opfer des Chaos wurden, das sie einst miterschaffen hatten.
