Le 13 octobre 1972, le vol 571 de la Fuerza Aérea Uruguaya, transportant une équipe de rugby et leurs proches, s’écrase dans les Andes à une altitude de plus de 3 600 mètres. L’avion, en route de Montevideo vers Santiago, disparaît dans une tempête de neige. À bord, 45 personnes, dont 40 passagers et 5 membres d’équipage. Ce qui suit est l’une des histoires de survie les plus bouleversantes et terrifiantes de l’histoire moderne, marquée par le désespoir, la résilience et des choix inimaginables.


L’impact initial tue 12 personnes. Les survivants, pour la plupart de jeunes hommes, se retrouvent piégés dans un environnement hostile : des températures glaciales, un vent mordant et un manque cruel de nourriture et d’équipement. L’épave de l’avion, à peine visible dans la neige, offre un abri précaire. Les recherches aériennes, entravées par le blizzard et le camouflage blanc de l’épave, sont abandonnées après huit jours, laissant les survivants sans espoir d’un secours imminent.


Face à la faim et à l’épuisement, le groupe prend une décision qui hantera leurs consciences : pour survivre, ils doivent consommer la chair des corps préservés dans la neige. Cette idée, d’abord inconcevable, devient une nécessité après des semaines de famine. Les survivants, catholiques pour la plupart, débattent longuement, certains comparant cet acte à la communion eucharistique, cherchant une justification morale dans leur désespoir. Ils découpent la chair avec des éclats de verre, luttant contre la nausée et la culpabilité. Ce choix, bien que moralement déchirant, leur permet de tenir face aux conditions extrêmes.


Les jours se transforment en semaines. Les avalanches aggravent la situation, tuant huit personnes supplémentaires et ensevelissant l’épave. Le froid incessant, les infections et la malnutrition affaiblissent les survivants. Pourtant, leur volonté de vivre persiste. Après avoir capté à la radio que les recherches ont cessé, trois d’entre eux, Roberto Canessa, Nando Parrado et Antonio Vizintín, décident d’entreprendre une expédition désespérée à travers les montagnes pour chercher de l’aide. Équipés de vêtements de fortune et de maigres provisions, ils marchent pendant dix jours dans des conditions inhumaines, escaladant des pics enneigés sans équipement d’alpinisme.
Le 22 décembre 1972, après 72 jours d’enfer, Canessa et Parrado atteignent une vallée où ils rencontrent un paysan chilien. Les secours sont enfin alertés. Deux hélicoptères parviennent à localiser l’épave, sauvant les 16 survivants restants. Leur histoire choque le monde entier, suscitant à la fois admiration pour leur courage et malaise face à leurs choix extrêmes.
Cette tragédie révèle la force de l’instinct de survie et les limites de la condition humaine.
