🚨Internal McLAREN SHOCK: Oscar Piastri reportedly ANGRY and stormed out of a strategy meeting after discovering he was left out of the car upgrade plan, while Lando Norris was given absolute priority — a tense moment that rocked the F1 paddock and raised suspicions of McLaren’s “prioritization” right before the new season👇

Internal McLaren Shock: Oscar Piastri Reportedly Furious and Stormed Out of Strategy Meeting After Discovering He Was Excluded from Major Car Upgrade Plan — Lando Norris Given Absolute Priority in Tense Moment That Rocked the F1 Paddock and Sparked “Favoritism” Suspicions Right Before 2026 Season Opener

McLaren’s much-hyped 2026 pre-season preparations have been hit by an explosive internal rift that has left the team scrambling to contain the damage just weeks before the Australian Grand Prix.

According to multiple credible sources inside the Woking garage who spoke to leading F1 outlets on condition of anonymity, Oscar Piastri reportedly stormed out of a critical strategy and technical briefing yesterday in visible anger after learning he had been deliberately left out of the first major performance upgrade package planned for the opening rounds.

The MCL40 upgrade — described by engineers as a “significant aero and floor evolution” designed to close the gap to Red Bull in high-speed corners — will be introduced on Lando Norris’s car only for the Bahrain and Saudi Arabia races, with Piastri’s car receiving the package two races later in Japan.

The decision — reportedly made to “maximise points in the early season while we finalise reliability data” — was presented as purely performance-driven by technical director Andrea Stella and head of aerodynamics Peter Prodromou during the closed-door meeting. However, Piastri — who finished runner-up to Norris in the 2025 Drivers’ Championship — is said to have reacted with disbelief and fury.

Witnesses describe the 24-year-old Australian standing up abruptly, slamming his tablet on the table, and declaring: “This is bullshit. You’re making me the second driver again.” He then walked out of the room, leaving senior management and engineers in stunned silence.

The incident has ignited immediate suspicions of favoritism within McLaren — accusations the team has repeatedly denied since Piastri’s promotion to full race driver in 2023. Norris, the 2025 champion, has been openly positioned as the team’s lead driver for the new regulation era, with several insiders claiming the upgrade priority is part of a deliberate strategy to give the British driver the best possible chance of defending his title

.

One senior McLaren engineer told Autosport under strict anonymity: “Oscar is furious and he has every right to be. He’s proven he’s as quick — if not quicker — than Lando in race trim. To give the upgrade to one car only for the first two races is a massive statement. It’s hard to see it as anything other than prioritization.”

Piastri has not commented publicly since the meeting. However, sources close to the driver say he is “extremely disappointed” and is currently considering his options, including a potential conversation with team principal Andrea Stella about his long-term future at the team.

McLaren issued a carefully worded statement this afternoon: “McLaren operates a merit-based system with clear performance priorities designed to maximise points for both drivers. The upgrade rollout is a technical decision based on data, reliability targets and risk management. We have full confidence in both Oscar and Lando and are focused on delivering a competitive car at the front from the first race.”

Behind closed doors, however, the atmosphere is reportedly tense. Several mechanics and engineers have privately expressed concern that the decision risks fracturing team morale at the worst possible time — right before the most radical regulation reset in F1 history.

The timing is brutal. McLaren enters 2026 as the defending Constructors’ Champion after ending Red Bull’s dominance in 2025. Any internal division could hand the advantage straight back to Verstappen and the restructured Red Bull-Honda operation.

Fans have reacted with fury and division online. #JusticeForOscar and #McLarenFavoritism are trending worldwide, with many accusing the team of repeating the same mistakes that plagued them in the Ricciardo-Norris era:

“Oscar carried McLaren in the second half of 2025. Giving Lando the upgrade first is a slap in the face.” “Norris won the title fair and square. If he gets the car first, it’s because he earned it. Stop the whining.” “This smells like 2016 all over again. McLaren never learns.”

With pre-season testing in Bahrain just two weeks away and the Australian Grand Prix — Piastri’s home race — on the horizon, McLaren now faces its first real test of unity in the post-title era.

Oscar Piastri walked out of a meeting today. The question is whether he’ll walk out of the team tomorrow.

The 2026 season hasn’t even started — but the war inside McLaren already has.
