EXPLOSIVE NEWS 🛑 “We have evidence that the race in Japan was fixed!” — Max Verstappen fumes after podium finish, accuses Kimi Antonelli of illegal victory and threatens immediate retirement

In one of the most explosive post-race outbursts in recent Formula 1 history, reigning four-time World Champion Max Verstappen has accused Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli of achieving an “illegal victory” at the Japanese Grand Prix and threatened to retire from the sport immediately if the FIA fails to act.

Speaking with visible anger in the media pen shortly after finishing second at Suzuka, Verstappen dropped a bombshell that has shaken the entire paddock:

“We have evidence that the race in Japan was fixed. This wasn’t a fair fight. If the FIA doesn’t do something about it, I’m done. I will retire right now.”

The Dutchman’s comments came after another dominant performance by 18-year-old Kimi Antonelli, who secured his second consecutive victory in the Mercedes W17. While many praised the rookie’s composure and speed, Verstappen and the Red Bull team clearly believe something was seriously wrong with the Mercedes car’s performance.

Verstappen claimed that Red Bull possesses “clear video evidence and telemetry data” showing suspicious activity around Antonelli’s car in the hours before the race. He specifically pointed to what he described as a “mysterious device” being used in the garage and unusual handling characteristics during the final stages of the race that allowed Antonelli to pull away comfortably despite heavy tyre degradation.

“This isn’t the first time,” Verstappen added. “We’ve seen this kind of thing before this season. If the FIA keeps turning a blind eye, then there is no point in me continuing. I race to win fairly, not to finish second behind a car that shouldn’t be that fast.”

The comments have sent the F1 world into turmoil. Max Verstappen, who has dominated the sport for the past four years, has never before threatened retirement so openly and so early in a season. His frustration appears to stem from repeated feelings that Red Bull is being out-developed and possibly out-manoeuvred by Mercedes’ technical package.

The FIA has already confirmed it has received Red Bull’s formal complaint and has launched an urgent investigation into the Mercedes W17, focusing on the front wing, floor, and power unit mapping. Technical delegates are currently examining both Mercedes cars in Suzuka, and a decision is expected within 48 hours.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff immediately rejected the accusations, calling them “irresponsible and damaging.”

“Kimi drove a brilliant race,” Wolff said. “We are fully confident that our car complies with the regulations. We welcome any investigation because we have nothing to hide. Max is a great champion, but these kinds of accusations without proof are not helpful for the sport.”

However, several other team principals have privately expressed support for Verstappen’s decision to speak out, suggesting that the performance gap between Mercedes and the rest of the field has become suspiciously large in recent races.

The threat of retirement from Verstappen has caused particular panic. At only 28 years old and in the prime of his career, the Dutchman remains the benchmark in Formula 1. His departure would be a catastrophic blow to the sport’s global appeal and commercial value.

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner tried to calm the situation but admitted the team shares Verstappen’s concerns.

“Max is extremely frustrated, and we understand why,” Horner said. “We will present all our evidence to the FIA and trust them to do the right thing. Retirement is not something we want to even consider, but Max is a competitor. He wants to fight on equal terms.”

The timing of this controversy could not be more critical. The 2026 season is still relatively young, but the championship battle is already tightening. Antonelli’s two consecutive wins have propelled him into serious title contention as a rookie — something almost unheard of in modern F1.

Social media has exploded with divided opinions. Some fans support Verstappen and demand a full investigation, while others accuse him of being a sore loser unable to accept that Mercedes has simply built a better car this year.

As the paddock prepares to leave Japan for the next round, the entire Formula 1 community is holding its breath. The FIA now faces immense pressure to deliver a transparent and swift verdict. Any perception of leniency could further damage trust in the governing body.

For Kimi Antonelli, the situation is incredibly difficult. The highly-rated teenager has been living a dream season, but these latest accusations threaten to overshadow his achievements and cast doubt on the legitimacy of his results.

Max Verstappen’s raw emotion and threat of immediate retirement have raised the stakes dramatically. The four-time champion has made it clear: he will not continue racing if he believes the competition is no longer fair.

The next 48 hours will be decisive. Will the FIA find evidence to support Verstappen’s claims? Or will Mercedes be cleared, forcing the Dutchman to either accept the situation or follow through on his dramatic threat?

Formula 1 stands at a crossroads. One wrong move by the governing body could push the sport’s biggest star toward the exit door — and change the landscape of the championship forever.

The world is watching.
