SAD NEWS 💔 “He was always thinking about the Australian fans until his very last moment.” Neale Daniher’s proud brother, Terry,

Neale Daniher’s proud brother, Terry, brought fans to tears as he revealed the legendary AFL icon’s final wish in his last moments, along with a deeply emotional message he wanted to pass on to the people of Australia and AFL fans. It was only eight simple words, but those words have touched the hearts of millions.

“He was always thinking about the Australian fans until his very last moment,” Terry Daniher said softly, his voice cracking with emotion during an exclusive interview. Even as his body weakened from motor neurone disease, Neale’s mind remained focused on the people who had supported him throughout his remarkable journey.

In the final weeks of his life, surrounded by family in his Melbourne home, Neale Daniher made one last request. He asked his brother to deliver a message not just to his loved ones, but to every Australian who had followed his battle. The message, only eight words long, has since spread like wildfire across the country:

“Thank you for the love. Keep fighting together.”

Those eight words, spoken with what little strength Neale had left, captured the essence of the man millions had come to admire. Not just as a champion footballer, coach, and commentator, but as a symbol of courage, dignity, and unwavering love for his country.

Neale Daniher was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in 2013. Rather than retreating into silence, he turned his diagnosis into a powerful platform. He founded the “FightMND” foundation, raised tens of millions of dollars for research, and became one of the most recognisable faces in the fight against the cruel disease. Through it all, his warmth, humour, and humility never faded.

Terry Daniher, himself a former AFL star and one of Neale’s four footballing brothers, fought back tears as he recounted their final conversations. “He didn’t want pity. He didn’t want people to remember him as someone who was dying. He wanted people to remember the fight, the love, and the hope,” Terry said.

Even in his final days, Neale was still watching AFL matches, still sending messages to current players, and still thinking about how he could help others. According to Terry, one of Neale’s biggest concerns was that people might stop caring about MND research after he was gone. That fear led to the simple but powerful eight-word message — a call for unity and continued effort long after he was no longer here.

The Daniher family has always been close. Neale, Terry, Chris, and Anthony all played in the VFL/AFL, creating one of the most famous footballing families in Australian history. But in recent years, it was Neale’s public battle that brought the family even closer together.

When news of Neale’s passing spread, tributes poured in from every corner of Australian sport and society. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described him as “a true Australian hero.” AFL legend Gary Ablett Jr called him “the strongest man I’ve ever known.” Current players from across the league wore black armbands and observed moments of silence in his honour.

But it was Terry’s emotional revelation of those final eight words that truly moved the nation. “Thank you for the love. Keep fighting together.” The message has been shared hundreds of thousands of times on social media. Schools, footy clubs, and community groups have begun using it as a rallying cry. FightMND has reported a significant increase in donations in the days since the message was made public.

Neale Daniher’s journey from a tough, talented country footballer to a national inspiration touched millions. He coached Melbourne Football Club with passion and later became a respected commentator known for his honesty and insight. Yet it was his grace in the face of illness that defined his legacy.

In his final weeks, Neale often told family members that he was at peace. He had lived a full life, raised a beautiful family, and fought hard for a cause bigger than himself. His only regret, Terry revealed, was that he wouldn’t be there to see the next generation of fighters continue the work.

As Australia mourns one of its greatest sporting figures, the eight words he left behind serve as both a farewell and a call to action. They remind us that even in our darkest moments, love, gratitude, and unity can light the way forward.

Neale Daniher may no longer be with us in body, but his spirit — brave, generous, and deeply caring — continues to inspire. And thanks to those eight powerful words, his fight will carry on in the hearts of Australians for generations to come.
