“I hate it, I feel like I want to cry.” 😭 Ronnie O’Sullivan’s private breakdown at the Crucible reveals the brutal psychological cost of his genius. Full story in the comment

Ronnie O’Sullivan has long been regarded as one of the most naturally gifted snooker players in the history of the sport. Nicknamed “The Rocket” for his lightning-fast style and unparalleled talent, he has collected seven World Championship titles and countless other major honours. Yet behind the swagger and the record-breaking achievements lies a far more complicated story. O’Sullivan has repeatedly allowed the public a glimpse into his emotional fragility, delivering raw confessions of anxiety, trauma, and doubt that stand in stark contrast to his dominance on the table.

Over the years, he has also made a series of dramatic retirement announcements that have kept fans and pundits guessing about his future.

One of the most painful chapters in O’Sullivan’s life occurred when he received devastating news about his father while competing in Thailand. His mother, Maria, phoned him during the tournament to tell him that his father had been convicted of murder and sent to prison. According to her account, O’Sullivan screamed down the phone and collapsed in his hotel room. The shock of that moment left a lasting mark.

In later interviews, he spoke openly about how the event had “damaged” him and admitted that he often wished he had grown up in a normal family rather than one shaped by such profound trauma. This early wound appears to have shaped much of the self-destructive behaviour and emotional turbulence that would surface throughout his career.

These inner struggles have frequently manifested as intense stage fright and mental meltdowns, even at the height of his success. During the 2024 World Championship, O’Sullivan was filmed in a particularly vulnerable moment backstage while speaking with his long-time psychologist, Dr Steve Peters. He confessed to feeling “scared” and “ill with pressure,” describing physical symptoms that included heavy legs and a sensation he called “jelly leg.” At one point he admitted, “I feel like I want to cry. Hell.

I don’t even feel like I want to face this, I can’t, I feel so tight.” The footage offered a rare insight into the anxiety that continues to affect one of the most decorated players in the game, revealing that even after decades at the top, the pressure has never fully eased.

The pattern of emotional distress continued into 2025. Ahead of another World Championship, O’Sullivan suffered a bizarre on-table meltdown during which he snapped his cue in frustration. In the build-up to the event, he gave a candid pre-tournament interview in which he declared he was “scared about playing.” He went further, admitting that he had “lost my nerve” and perhaps even “lost my bottle.” Most strikingly, he suggested that he could “still bloody withdraw” at the last minute if he suffered another such episode.

These comments painted a picture of a champion who, despite his extraordinary record, was still battling deep self-doubt and fear of failure.

O’Sullivan’s relationship with retirement has been equally dramatic and unpredictable. As early as 2013, shortly after winning the World Championship, he stunned the snooker world by revealing that he had only entered the tournament to earn money for his children’s school fees. He also confessed that he felt “a little bit bored” with the sport, comments that came despite the triumph and raised questions about his long-term commitment. Nearly a decade later, after equalling the record with his seventh World Championship title in 2022, O’Sullivan broke down in tears.

He embraced his opponent Judd Trump and later explained the overwhelming emotion, saying, “I was so emotional. To finally get over the line, I just thought it would never happen… I was just sobbing in his arms.” The moment captured both the relief of victory and the heavy emotional toll the journey had taken.

More recently, in 2025, following a series of withdrawals from major events, O’Sullivan once again turned to the subject of retirement. He set himself a two-year deadline to “figure it out,” expressing serious doubts about whether he could ever rediscover his best form. He described himself as “probably damaged goods in the form of a snooker player” and acknowledged the possibility that he might never play in another UK tournament again. These statements reignited speculation about whether the greatest player of his generation was finally preparing to step away for good.

Throughout these turbulent periods, O’Sullivan has continued to work closely with Dr Steve Peters to manage his mental health. The psychologist has become a familiar and trusted figure in his corner, helping him navigate the intense pressure of elite competition. The candid conversations captured on camera during tournaments have offered fans a rare window into the inner world of an athlete whose brilliance at the table often masks a constant internal battle.

What makes O’Sullivan such a compelling figure is precisely this contrast between his almost machine-like precision on the baize and his very human vulnerability off it. His repeated threats to retire, tearful admissions of fear, and reflections on personal trauma remind everyone that even the most gifted individuals carry deep emotional burdens. While his talent has produced some of the most breathtaking moments in snooker history, it is these raw and honest episodes that have made him not only a champion but also one of the most fascinating and relatable personalities the sport has ever seen.

As he continues to navigate the later stages of his career, the question remains whether The Rocket will finally find peace with the game that has both defined and tormented him for so long.
