“IL VECCHIO FLASH È WOKE” Il desiderio dell’attore Ezra Miller di portare un supereroe LGBTQ+ nella DC sta facendo arrabbiare i fan.

OLD THE FLASH IS WOKE

In the electrifying world of DC Comics, where caped crusaders battle cosmic threats and personal demons, few characters have sparked as much debate as Barry Allen, the scarlet speedster known as The Flash. But lately, the buzz isn’t about multiversal chases or villainous showdowns—it’s about actor Ezra Miller, the non-binary star who once zipped into our hearts as Barry, reigniting a firestorm with bold calls for more LGBTQ+ representation in the franchise. Miller’s latest plea for a queer superhero to take center stage has fans divided, with accusations of “woke” overreach flying faster than a bolt of lightning. As the DC Universe reboots under James Gunn’s watchful eye, this controversy threatens to outpace even the quickest villain, exposing raw nerves in a fandom already weary of cultural reckonings.

Ezra Miller burst onto the scene in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, embodying Barry Allen with a wide-eyed intensity that captured the character’s youthful vulnerability. As the first openly queer actor to lead a major superhero film in The Flash (2023), Miller broke barriers, zipping through timelines and earning praise for bringing nuance to a role long dominated by straight, cisgender portrayals. But off-screen, Miller’s journey has been anything but smooth. Coming out as queer in 2012, they faced industry whispers that it was a “mistake” for a leading man, yet persisted, kissing a male fan at Comic-Con in a moment of unapologetic joy that went viral. By 2018, identifying as non-binary, Miller declared, “I don’t identify as a man, I don’t identify as a woman. I barely identify as a human,” positioning themselves as a beacon for LGBTQ+ visibility in Hollywood’s spandex-clad elite.

Fast-forward to September 2025, and Miller’s back in the spotlight—not for a comeback role, but for a fiery interview with Variety at a low-key indie film festival in Vermont. Speaking on the heels of DC’s announcement for The Flash: Rebirth, a soft reboot slated for 2027, Miller didn’t hold back. “It’s time DC stops tiptoeing around the rainbow,” they said, eyes flashing with that signature intensity. “We’ve got Batman brooding over his parents, Superman wrestling farm-boy ethics—give us a hero whose power comes from embracing their full spectrum identity. A trans speedster, a non-binary Green Lantern, hell, make Barry queer if you have to recast. Representation isn’t a checkbox; it’s the spark that ignites real fans.” The words landed like a punch from Darkseid, igniting social media and comic forums overnight.

Fans erupted, and not in applause. On X (formerly Twitter), #OldFlashIsWoke trended globally within hours, amassing over 500,000 posts. “Ezra’s turning The Flash into a pride parade float. Keep politics out of my comics!” tweeted @SpeedsterSage, a self-proclaimed purist with 200,000 followers, echoing sentiments from Reddit’s r/DC_Cinematic, where threads dissected Miller’s “agenda” with surgical precision. One viral meme showed Barry Allen tripping over a rainbow trail, captioned: “When your superpower is speed, but your real enemy is subtlety.” Backlash intensified as users unearthed clips from Miller’s past, including a 2022 Instagram rant against the Ku Klux Klan that some branded as “unhinged virtue-signaling.” By midday, boycott calls surged, with petitions on Change.org demanding Warner Bros. sideline Miller entirely, citing the 2023 Flash film’s $200 million flop as proof that “woke” casting kills box office gold.

The anger runs deeper than surface memes. For many longtime fans, DC’s pantheon—forged in the 1940s amid World War II heroism—represents escapist purity, a bulwark against real-world chaos. “I grew up with Wally West dodging bullets, not dodging pronouns,” lamented @ComicCrusader87 in a 10,000-like thread. Miller’s advocacy taps into broader fatigue with Hollywood’s push for diversity, from Marvel’s multiverse of identities to Disney’s rainbow remakes. Polls on fan sites like CBR.com show 62% of respondents agreeing that “forced LGBTQ+ elements dilute classic stories,” a sentiment amplified by the 2024 election cycle’s cultural wars. Trump’s victory, some argue, signaled a rejection of what they call the “woke mind virus,” with The Flash‘s dismal 2023 opening—$55 million domestically against $220 million budget—as exhibit A.

Yet, not all lightning strikes the same tree. Progressive voices in the fandom hail Miller as a trailblazer, pointing to comics’ own queer legacy: Alan Scott’s Green Lantern came out as gay in 2012, and Midnighter’s been punching homophobes since 2002. “Ezra’s right—superheroes evolve. Denying that is slower than molasses,” countered @QueerQuicksilver, whose post garnered 15,000 supportive replies. LGBTQ+ creators like Tom King, who penned Batman‘s homoerotic undertones, argue that representation fuels innovation, not division. Even Gunn, DC’s new steward, has teased “inclusive” arcs in upcoming projects, though he’s dodged specifics on recasting Barry amid rumors of a fresh face like Jordan Fisher.

Miller, ever the enigma, hasn’t backed down. In a follow-up TikTok, they quipped, “Hate moves slow; love’s the real speed force.” But whispers from Warner Bros. insiders suggest this could be their last lap with DC. The studio, still licking wounds from The Flash‘s bomb, prioritizes profitability over provocation in a post-streaming era where audiences crave nostalgia over novelty. As Rebirth gears up, with cameos from Michael Keaton’s Batman and Sasha Calle’s Supergirl, the question looms: Will DC accelerate toward inclusivity, or slam the brakes to appease the purists?

This clash isn’t just about one actor or one hero—it’s a microcosm of superhero cinema’s identity crisis. Miller’s desire for an LGBTQ+ icon isn’t mere activism; it’s a demand for mirrors in a genre built on wish-fulfillment. Fans’ fury, raw and unfiltered, reveals a fandom fracturing along fault lines of tradition versus transformation. In a world spinning faster than ever, can The Flash outrun its own shadow? Or will this bolt from the blue leave DC grounded, forever chasing the ghost of its un-woke past? As the debates rage on, one thing’s clear: in the race for hearts and minds, no one’s standing still.
