Ich habe mein ganzes Leben dem Holz gewidmet. Dreißig Jahre habe ich Bäume gefällt, Rigging betrieben und jeden Morgen mit dem Klang der Motorsäge begonnen. Doch nach dem Herbst 2022 änderte sich alles. Ich verkaufte meine Kettensägen, meinen gesamten Fuhrpark und nahm einen Job als Hausmeister an — weit weg von den Wäldern, die ich einst liebte.

Es begann auf der Olympic-Halbinsel, einem Ort, den selbst Karten kaum verzeichnen. Diese Wälder sind nicht die idyllischen Postkartenlandschaften, die man sich vorstellt. Sie sind uralt, dicht und voller Schatten, die sich nicht bewegen, selbst wenn der Wind weht. Ich glaubte, jeden Ton dieser Wälder zu kennen. Ich lag falsch.

Wir waren vier Männer: Dave, unser erfahrener Vorarbeiter, Mac, der alte Hüne, der behauptete, die Bäume könnten hören, ein junger Kollege, der vor nichts Angst hatte, und ich — Frank, Logger in dritter Generation. Unser Auftrag war simpel: Ein vergessenes Stück Urwald roden, das seit fünfzig Jahren unberührt war. Auf dem Papier ein Traumjob, doch was wir dort fanden, war Albtraum pur.

Schon bei unserer Ankunft bemerkten wir, dass etwas nicht stimmte. Der Wald schien uns zu beobachten. Die Luft war schwer, beinahe elektrisch, und selbst unsere Motoren hallten nicht wie gewohnt. Je tiefer wir vordrangen, desto unheimlicher wurde es.

Innerhalb von zwei Wochen verschwanden drei meiner Kollegen spurlos. Ich war der Einzige, der überlebte — oder besser gesagt, entkam. Ich habe Dinge gesehen, die ich nie vergessen werde: riesige, humanoide Gestalten, die sich zwischen den Bäumen bewegten, ohne ein Geräusch zu machen. Bigfoot, sagen manche. Ich weiß nur, dass diese Kreatur uns jagte und dass manche Wälder besser unberührt bleiben.

Seitdem meide ich Bäume. Ich meide Wälder. Ich arbeite unter flackerndem Neonlicht und fege Betonböden. Die Erinnerungen verfolgen mich. Ich erzähle meine Geschichte, damit andere wissen: Manche Naturgeheimnisse sind nicht zum Entdecken gemacht.
