Novak Djokovic has spoken out for the first time since he reportedly uprooted his family to move to Athens, Greece. The world No. 4 has been spotted at a local tennis club, while his two children are said to have started school in their new home. Djokovic and his son, Stefan, also attended Greece’s recent Davis Cup tie against Brazil.
The 24-time Major winner is set to compete at the ATP 250 event in Athens in November. And he has now addressed suggestions that he has permanently moved his family to Greece.
Djokovic was spotted around Athens by Greek outlet Tennisko Reketiranje, where he was quizzed about his new life, “I’m with my son now, sorry,” he said, before he was asked whether he was planning to move to the Greek capital permanently.
The 38-year-old downplayed reports that he had already settled in with his family. He added: “I don’t know, I don’t know.
It comes after Tennis24 reported that Djokovic’s two children, Stefan, 10, and Tara, eight, have been enrolled in St. Lawrence College, a private and independent British school, while the family has found a place to live in the Southern Suburbs.
Djokovic and his son were spotted hitting together on a court at the Kavouri Tennis Club.
The world No. 4 was also said to be looking for a tennis club that Stefan and Tara can attend, considering either Kavouri or the 91 Athens Riviera.
Earlier this year, the Serbian superstar sparked rumours that he was planning to move to Greece when he met the Prime Minister on multiple occasions.
There were reports that he was hoping to use a Golden Visa programme, which grants residence to non-EU citizens who make investments in the country.
Speaking at Wimbledon earlier this year, Djokovic said: “Obviously, there’s a lot of speculation, but no, at the moment. But who knows what could happen in the future. Yeah, it could happen.”
Djokovic has already committed to playing the Hellenic Championship from November 2 to 9. The ATP 250 event is usually held in Belgrade and overseen by Djokovic’s family, but it has been relocated to Athens this year.
