Novak Djokovic has sent shockwaves through the tennis world with a stunning revelation: his greatest wish before retirement is not to win more Grand Slam titles, but rather to pursue a special goal that has left fans in awe. While many believed Djokovic would remain fixated on adding to his Grand Slam tally, the world No. 1 surprised everyone by sharing a deeply personal aspiration for the final chapter of his career.

Novak Djokovic reveals his special goal before bringing his glittering career to a close: winning the Davis Cup once again. And for the Serbian legend, that chance is still very much alive.

Djokovic wants to win Davis Cup

Djokovic recently confirmed his desire to lift the Davis Cup trophy with Team Serbia before he retires. That opportunity remains open if he continues competing beyond the age of 39.

Fans will surely remember the 2023 Davis Cup semifinal in Malaga, where Djokovic held three match points against Jannik Sinner but failed to convert. That bitter loss became a turning point, as Sinner went on to lead Italy to the championship the very next day. Since then, Djokovic has struggled to regain his edge over the young star, who has captured four Grand Slam titles in just two years.

In the recent Davis Cup qualifiers in Serbia, Djokovic did not participate in the tie against Turkey. Nevertheless, his teammates delivered brilliantly, securing a 3-1 victory to send Serbia into the first round of next season. This paves the way for Djokovic to make his return to national duty as early as January, should he decide to extend his career for another season with a Davis Cup farewell in mind.

The decision looms even larger following Djokovic’s reflective comments after his defeat to Carlos Alcaraz at the 2025 US Open. Despite reaching the semifinals of all four Grand Slams this year, he fell to Sinner at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon, before losing again to Alcaraz in New York.

“In Grand Slam five-set matches, it’s very difficult for me to overcome Sinner and Alcaraz,” Djokovic admitted. “In a best-of-three format, my chances are higher, but over five sets it’s really brutal. I’m not giving up on Grand Slams — I’ll still fight to reach finals and hopefully win at least one more title.”

The Davis Cup, with its best-of-three format, could become the perfect stage for Djokovic’s final battles alongside his teammates. Having repeatedly stated it as one of the greatest goals of his career, Djokovic made no secret of his enduring hope to hoist the trophy one more time before saying goodbye:

“The Davis Cup has always been a huge source of pride for me. It’s the most important team competition in the history of tennis, with more than a century of legacy. I hope I can win it again before I end my career.”

Over the weekend, Djokovic was spotted in the stands in Athens for the clash between Greece and Brazil. There, home favorite Stefanos Tsitsipas was upset by young talent Joao Fonseca, a result that sent Brazil through.
