These magnificent tombs represent the legendary version of Spain of “Romeo and Julia.”
This tomb pair was created after the discovery of two mummified bodies in the 16th century. It was believed that the mummies belonged to “legendary lovers of Teruel.”

History stipulates that two children’s love at the beginning of the thirteenth century, Diego Martínez Marcilla and Isabel Segura prevented Isabel’s father from marrying when they have become the legal era. Isabel’s rich father did not prevent him from marrying the Marcill family, even if Diego’s father was necessary.
Isabel was able to persuade her father to wait five years before she could marry him with another person. Meanwhile, Diego is expected to leave the city and be lucky in another place. Isabel’s father accepted and the five years passed without Diego giving a word.

When he could finally return to the city five years later, Diego was dismayed when he knew that Isabel’s father had forced him to marry the day before his arrival. Diego did not know that he had opened a day too late, as little as he had examined the day the agreement was concluded as part of the five -year period.
While this dispute when Diego went to Isabel’s room, she refused to kiss her, by loyalty to her new husband, who slept by her side. Diego stood up and died in an inconsolable. Isabel was so desperate that she died at Diego’s funeral.

The inhabitants of Teruel, who knew the history of the two youth lovers, insisted that they were buried together. The discovery of two mummies in the sixteenth century again warmed the legend.
The tomb
Despite the modern evidence that these two bodies could be the two lovers, people always visit the Orpato mausoleum, in which their supposed remains are preserved. The two tombs designed by Juan de Ávalos show the couple how they approach death.
