“Cheating?” — Max Verstappen accuses Kimi Antonelli of ILLEGAL technology during the Chinese Grand Prix, FIA launches urgent investigation
SHANGHAI – The Formula 1 world is ablaze once again. Max Verstappen openly leveled accusations against Kimi Antonelli and Mercedes during the press conference following qualifying for the Chinese Grand Prix. The four-time world champion called the 19-year-old Italian rookie’s performance “impossible” and insinuated that “illegal technology” is involved. The FIA announced an urgent investigation within the hour.
It all started after qualifying at the Shanghai International Circuit. Kimi Antonelli surprised everyone by taking pole position with a downright dominant lap, more than two tenths faster than Lando Norris and nearly four tenths ahead of Verstappen himself. The McLaren and Red Bull drivers were perplexed. But it was Verstappen who was the first to drop the bombshell.

The FIA has taken note of the public allegations made by Max Verstappen. An urgent investigation has been launched immediately. We welcome any investigation. Everything on our car complies with the regulations. Max can say what he wants, but accusations without evidence are irresponsible. Kimi drove a brilliant qualifying — period.
Nevertheless, the atmosphere in the paddock is extremely tense. Several teams (McLaren, Ferrari, Aston Martin) reportedly pushed for a thorough investigation behind the scenes. Lando Norris said after qualifying with a wry smile:
“I thought I was fast today… but apparently not fast enough. If there is something illegal in that Mercedes, I want to know too.”
The timing is dramatic. The Sprint Race and the Chinese Grand Prix are just around the corner. If the FIA does indeed find irregularities, it could lead to the disqualification of Antonelli’s pole, grid penalties, points deductions, or even a temporary suspension for Mercedes. In the worst-case scenario, it would plunge the young Italian — seen by many as the biggest sensation of 2026 — straight into an existential crisis.
Fans on social media are divided. The hashtags #CheatingAntonelli and #FIAInvestigation are exploding. One half calls Verstappen a bad loser, the other half demands immediate action: “If it is true, Mercedes must be kicked out before the season has even just begun!”
For now, we have to wait and see. The FIA promises an update “before the start of the Sprint race on Saturday”. Until then, a sword of Damocles hangs over the Mercedes garage.
The Formula 1 of 2026 promised a new era. Instead, after just two races, we are facing accusations of cheating, emergency investigations, and a full-blown scandal.
